Renowned for its outstanding natural beauty, County Fermanagh in the west of Northern Ireland is the perfect hideaway for a romantic or invigorating break. This largely rural county combines a rich plethora of panoramic vistas with a host of historic treasures around every corner. The most prominent natural features in Fermanagh is the River Erne, carving through the centre until its formation as Lough Erne near the historic market town of Enniskillen.

Enniskillen is the county’s most important centre and is quintessentially Irish in both its heritage and its inhabitants as a result of its close proximity to the border. Uniquely situated on an island in the middle of the meandering River Erne that connects the upper and lower sections of Lough Erne, the town exudes charm and character with its warm and friendly inhabitants and its ancient historic monuments that certainly merit a day to absorb. The most prominent landmark is Enniskillen Castle and its collection of museums within the confines of the grounds. Occupying the central keep, the heritage centre features of wealth of interesting artefacts related to agriculture and industries in Fermanagh and A must see is The Regimental Museum at the turreted Watergate Building brimming with insignia, firearms and uniforms that belonged to the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers and dragoon guards. Equally, Enniskillen is the commercial hub of Fermanagh, containing an excellent repertoire of live entertainment in the form of contemporary and traditional music as well as good eateries and a fine collection of arts and crafts boutiques and at the Buttermarket and Fermanagh Cottage Industries.

The area around Enniskillen is stunningly beautiful and tranquil, particularly around Lough Erne at the doorstep of the town. Stretching for 50 miles, the lake is divided into two parts, namely the Upper Lough in the south and Lower Lough in the north, both connected by the river. The lakes are noted for their cluster of islands that contain Celtic and Early-Christian antiquities. The largest of the ancient sites in Lough Erne is Devenish Island, featuring an unusual 15th-century High Cross and a magnificent 12th-century round tower, regarded as one of the finest preserved in Ireland. To access the island, regular ferries operate from Trory Point Landing near Irvinestown. Steeped in history, Devenish Island is an ancient monastic site founded by St Molaise in the 6th-century and traces of its chequered past and Viking invasion can be spotted at the ancient abbey ruins.

The lakes of Fermanagh serve as an idyllic destination to enjoy leisure and outdoor activities during your vacation. One of the county’s most popular attractions are the extensive Marble Arch Caves accessed by organised boat trips along the river that runs through this carboniferous labyrinth. Over the course of the summer months, free guided walks are conducted by the Department of Environment, allowing you to discover the beauty of the surrounding limestone hills and test your endurance in negotiating this rugged terrain. Renowned as fisherman’s country, Fermanagh boasts a fine selection of spots to engage in this much-loved pastime amongst locals and visitors alike. Brown and Gillaroo trout fishing are seasonal from March to September whereas there is no closed season for perch, eel, roach and pike. Permits are prerequisite to fish in Lough Erne, available at the Fermanagh Tourist Information Centre in Enniskillen.

Both sides of Upper and Lower Lough Erne are interspersed with a treasure trove of grand stately homes, estates and castle that welcome visitors during the spring and summer seasons. The finest of Fermanagh’s plantation castles is Tully Castle, completed in 1613 as a formal residence for a Scottish planter’s family. Captured and burned by Roderick Maguire during the uprising of the mid 17th-century, the castle has preserved most of its original paving and contains various curiosities relating to the history of Fermanagh from the plantation era. In the north of the county on the shores of Upper Lough Erne, Crom Estate is certainly worth exploring where you can take to the various nature trails that traverse 760 hectares of woodland. Boats and bicycles are available for hire in the estate which provides self-catering accommodation for a relaxing vacation amidst one of county's most idyllic spots. Regarded as one of Northern Ireland’s most picturesque and charming counties, Fermanagh is the perfect retreat for relaxation and a pleasurable vacation at many of the lakeside hotels and self-catering accommodation dotted around the shores of Upper and Lower Lough Erne.
