DUBLIN FESTIVALS

Home Page | Dublin | Festivals

The Irish Capital showcases a fine selection of events and festivals throughout the year as part of its city calendar, reflecting Dublin's vibrant social scene and pub culture. No matter what time of the year you visit Dublin, you will be enthralled with the warm welcome and the relentlessly upbeat mood of the city in general, particularly during the summer months when the weather is more pleasant for staging outdoor festivals and events.

Whether you have a penchant for music, drama, film or food, you will find a festival suitable to your interests in this magnificent and vibrant capital city. Festivals in Dublin cover the whole spectrum small-scale community affairs to well-established and internationally renowned festivals, each providing a stage for the cream of Irish and international talent and attracting large festival audiences.

Inarguably one of the fastest developing arts festivals in Ireland, the annual Dublin Fringe Festival held from mid September to early October provides a platform for the work of accomplished and emerging performers in theatre, comedy, music and dance. Attracting audiences of over 50,000, this event of international significance is one of Europe's foremost arts festivals in Europe offering a insatiable platform for creativity, experimentation and innovation through its eclectic mix of theatre, puppetry, workshops, visual arts and youth fringe.

A visit to Dublin's renowned cultural quarter, The Temple Bar is a must when visiting the Irish capital due to the diversity of events that take place in and around the narrow cobbled lanes of this cosmopolitan city centre district. Temple Bar plays host to a full programme of events during Yuletide, adding that touch of festive magic to its charmingly quaint thoroughfares including the Festival of Light in late November with its annual parade of light, a host of food and Christmas Markets. All events during the Christmas season are unticketed and free for everyone to enjoy.

At the other end of the festival scale, The Greystones Arts Festival in July is an exciting community arts festival organised by volunteers from the coastal town of Greystones in County Wicklow (accessible by Dart Trains from Dublin City Centre). This particular annual event presents a fun-packed programme for families and people of all ages, including a series of interesting workshops where visitors can try a full hands-on experience at Samba Drumming, Stage Prop Building, DJ'ing and stilt walking prior to displaying their skills at the lively Mardi Gras Parade. Featuring one of the most impressively choreographed firewoks displays in Greater Dublin!

The ultimate and finest event that has been an integral part of Dublin life for centuries is the annual St Patrick's Day parade on the 17 march and the more recent St Patrick's Festival Inaugurated in 1995) that has developed around this world renowned celebration. From Parnell Square North to Patrick Street, the world famous St Patrick's Day parade features more than 3,000 Irish and international performers with each year having a specific theme (2005's being Mayhem, Mischief and Madness). This is an extremely popular and busy time to visit Dublin; therefore accommodation must be booked well in advance to experience one of world's most celebrated patron saint.

Attending one of the many festivals that this great European capital guarantees to take captivate you in all senses, through its cultural feast of traditional music, striking visual arts, street theatre and carnivals that are an inherent part of Dublin life.
