Cork City Marathon (4 June 2007)
Marathons are an annual event for most major cities and in 2007 after 21 years, Ireland's 2nd largest city is back on the 26 mile running challenge map.

The last time Cork city was in as much focus would have been in 2005 when it was voted the European Capital of Culture. The marathon follows the Ocean to City race which is held 2 days before making this cultural city a sporting attraction during the first few days of June.

Entrants collate at South Mall, St. Patrick's Street in time for the start of the marathon at 9.00am. Spectators can provide encouragement from either the city centre or the suburbs as the marathon's map incorporates a few mile radius that involves looping around the outskirts of Cork.

Entry is either by individual or by teams with up to 5 members and includes a wheelchair category. Entry fee is 50 euros and entrants must be 18 years of age on race day. Closing date for entry is the 11th May 2007. Contestants can raise funds for a charity of their own choosing.

To run a marathon you have to be disciplined and determined. A degree of fitness is crucial and a training programme should be engaged upon for a few months. Jerry Kiernan set the record to beat in 1983 with an impressive 2 hours, 13 minutes and 20 seconds for the 26.2 mile course.
